Wheel and Names

FOR TEACHERS

A classroom wheel. From names to teams.

Prepare your list once, then choose the right tool for the next part of your lesson.

Use the name wheel to pick one student, the activity wheel to choose a practice format, and the team generator to assign the whole class. Team generation includes each input participant exactly once.

Pick a student

  1. Enter one name or alias per line. Distinguish students with the same name: “Anna 1”, “Anna 2”.
  2. Use equal weights, such as 1. Check duplicates: two identical lines increase that name’s combined chance.
  3. To give different students a turn, enable “Remove after a spin”. The removed name is excluded from the next pick.
  4. Spin, then move to the next round. With one entry remaining, spinning is unavailable: the remaining participant is already determined.

Example: with 24 distinct names of weight 1, each has a 1/24 chance on the first pick, about 4.17%. After removing one name, each of the 23 remaining names has a 1/23 chance, about 4.35%. Without removal, a name can be picked again.

Open the name wheel

Choose an activity

  1. Open the template with eight practice formats, including partner explanation, drawing and giving an example.
  2. Replace general prompts with specific tasks for your topic. Remove unsuitable options before spinning.
  3. State the time available and expected output, then spin to select a format.
  4. Keep your edited wheel for the next lesson or export it as JSON.

For a lesson on fractions, change “Give an example” to “Write a problem about adding fractions”, and “Draw a diagram” to “Show 3/4 in a picture”. The wheel chooses a task; the teacher evaluates the answer.

Create class teams

  1. Enter one participant per line and check duplicates. Each line counts as a separate person here.
  2. Choose a number of teams or a maximum number of participants per team.
  3. Select “Create teams”. Each participant appears exactly once; group sizes differ by at most one person.
  4. Copy, download or print the result. Reshuffling creates a new assignment.

Example: 28 participants and 5 teams produce sizes of 6, 6, 6, 5 and 5. The generator randomizes the list; it does not consider attainment, skills or friendships.

Open the team generator

Before the lesson

  • Check names, repeated labels and weights. Equal weights give equal chances.
  • Agree in advance whether a student can pass or choose an alternative task.
  • Use numbers or aliases if you do not want names on screen or in a shared link.
  • Try a practice spin and check the screen in presentation view.
  • Save a copy: JSON for one wheel, or “Backup wheels” for all wheels in the current tool.

Save and transfer lists

Lists and the last 100 results are saved in this device’s browser. To move a wheel, download JSON and import it on another device. A workspace backup includes settings and history for all wheels in the current tool; restoration adds independent copies within the eight-wheel limit. There is no cloud synchronization.

A share link opens an independent copy without history. Names and weights in the link are readable. A localhost link works only on this computer; sharing with others requires a public site address.

Questions before your first lesson

How do I avoid picking the same student again?

Enable “Remove after a spin”. Remove duplicate names beforehand: a single spin removes the selected entry. To pick several distinct labels at once, use “Pick multiple winners”.

Should all weights be equal?

For an equal chance per student, use one entry for each student and equal weights. Changing a weight changes the probability; inspect settings in “Edit probabilities”.

Can I assign roles within teams?

The generator creates team membership but does not assign roles. After generating teams, you can make a separate role wheel and agree on assignment rules.

Can I prepare lists without an account?

Yes. No account is required. Lists are saved in your browser; download your lists or a backup before clearing site data.
